Robot Vacuum LiDAR, Mapping and Navigation Faults
When a robot vacuum starts getting lost, spinning in circles, drawing distorted maps or refusing to begin a clean, it is tempting to blame the LiDAR module immediately. LiDAR is important on many models, but reliable navigation also depends on wheel movement, encoders, cliff sensors, bumper sensing, wiring, firmware state and the main control board.

What LiDAR actually tells the robot
A rotating laser distance sensor measures surrounding geometry so the robot can estimate its position. If the turret motor, laser emitter, receiver, belt or optical path fails, the robot can lose that spatial reference. But the robot still compares LiDAR data with wheel movement and other sensors, so a wheel or encoder fault can make good LiDAR data look wrong.
Why wheel faults can look like mapping faults
If one drive wheel travels less distance than commanded, the robot's calculated position drifts away from reality. The navigation system then tries to correct a mismatch between expected and measured surroundings. This can create circling, crooked travel or a map that gradually becomes inaccurate.
Sensor contamination versus hardware failure
Dust on optical windows, hair around a LiDAR turret, debris under a bumper or contamination on cliff sensors can cause genuine navigation errors. Cleaning is worth checking first. When the fault persists, electrical testing and component inspection are needed to separate a sensor assembly problem from wiring or mainboard issues.

Does a bad map always mean the LiDAR is faulty?
No. A LiDAR failure can cause mapping problems, but wheel motors, encoders, cliff sensors, bumper sensors, wiring and control electronics can also produce incorrect navigation.
Can a LiDAR module be repaired?
Some faults can be repaired at component or subassembly level, while others are best solved by replacing the LiDAR module. The correct approach depends on the failure and parts availability.
Why does my robot spin in circles?
A robot may spin because one wheel is not moving correctly, an encoder is reporting incorrectly, a navigation sensor is failing, or the control system is trying to recover from inconsistent positioning data.
